Little Moves, Big Dreams: Mirei’s Chess Journey Begins

By Giovanni Capco, Winnipeg, Manitoba

As a dad who’s always loved playing chess, I wanted to share that passion with my daughter, Mirei Clare. She began learning the game at the age of 5. I believe chess is more than just a game—it teaches patience, focus, and problem-solving, all while having fun indoors, which is perfect for our long winters here in Winnipeg.
What makes this journey even more special is that Mirei is now being coached by Jojo, one of the instructors at Chesscolastics. He has been a huge help in guiding Mirei’s learning. He’s patient and encouraging, and Mirei is picking things up slowly but surely. She loves learning new moves, playing with me, and figuring out how to solve puzzles.
Seeing her enjoy the game and grow more confident every day makes me proud. Chess has become our way of bonding, learning, and spending meaningful time together. Whether she becomes a future master or just someone who enjoys the game, I’m just happy to be part of her journey, one move at a time.
